Pitch Lake

Sometimes educational trips with your family can be fun and informative.   The Pitch Lake is located in the village of La Brea (a small community situated southwest of Trinidad).  Asphalt can be found in Venezuela, Indonesia, Canada and the USA, however Trinidad's Pitch Lake has the largest deposit in the world and is considered the eight wonder of the World by the residents.

The history of the Pitch Lake is filled with legends and myths surrounding its existence, two of which still survives today - Callifaria Legend and the Colibri (Humingbird) Bird Legend.  You can read up more on these legends at http://www.trinidadlakeasphalt.com/home/history/legends-a-myths.html.

Many artifacts and fossils have been unearthed from the lake and can be viewed at the Museum Exhibit at the Visitor Centre.

Tours can be booked at the La Brea Pitch Lake Visitor Centre.  Did you know that during the rainy season, visitors can bathe in the natural sulphur pools which is thought to be good for your health.

Beautiful water roses, nymph lilies and bird of paradise grow naturally in a place where normal plants would not survive.  Cashew, gauva, mango and breadfruit trees surround the lake, there is also the presence of fishes below the water and birds flying in the area.

It's a long drive from where I live, but I'll say the trip is worth it........

Harry's Water Park and Nature Trail

Nature Resort

Harry's Water Park and Nature Trail

Another great place to take your family, Harry's Water Park located at Rio Claro.  Some fun activities offered for the various age groups include paddle and peddle boats, kayaking, fishing, wild life, nature trail, swimming pools complete with water slide, sheds for liming and outdoor cooking, kids play park, a well-stocked bar and food court, guest rooms, log cabins, and zip lining.

Kids can see different species of animals such as donkey, deer, agouti, birds, monkeys and snakes when they take a stroll down the nature tail.  There is a food court where guests can dine in or take away as well as a Convention Centre that can be rented for any event.

I've got to admit, it looks like a lot of fun fun fun......  I haven't gone to Harry's Water Park yet, but will surely take my daughter there soon.

La Vega Estate

Nature Resort

La Vega Estate

There are many interesting, exciting and educational places to visit with friends and family in Trinidad.  One of these locations is the La Vega Estate, a 250 acre hideaway with outdoor activities for the entire family.  La Vega was originally a cocoa estate,  but is now home to a garden center, plant nursery, nature and recreational park.

Some of their activities include fishing, pedal boating and nature trails.

I've visited the La Vega Estate recently with my work family and three year old daughter.  The facilities are maintained and clean, with friendly staff.  At the entrance to the pool area, there is a stall that offers floatation devices and snacks for sale.  Everyone loved the pool.

A short distance away is the Divine Mercy Shrine where visitors are invited to use for prayer or devotion.  Truly a beautiful sight.

A very nice destination for a relaxing day out with the family.
